Do you experience a nagging and sometimes even stabbing pain on the inside and / or top (instep) of the foot?

Then it is possible that you experience complaints of the attachment of the front shin muscle.

The tibialis anterior muscle is the lifter of the foot.

The muscle comes from the shin and runs through the front / top of the ankle to the inside of the foot. While walking, he ensures that the foot is lifted when you want to swing the leg forward. If he doesn't, you would trip over your own feet. When the heel has come to the ground, this muscle then ensures that the toes are brought to the ground slowly and in a controlled manner. If he does not do this, the foot will fold down and we speak of a foot drop.

Complaints
If you have complaints of the M. tibialis anterior, this can be noticed as follows:

  • The pain is on the inside and top / front of the foot
  • It often gives a nagging or stinging feeling
  • There may be swelling at the site of the pain
  • It is an overuse complaint. More complaints occur with movement, such as standing or walking
  • The muscle may suffer a loss of strength
  • Pressure from a shoe on the affected area can be very sensitive

Cause
There are several causes for the development of pain complaints in this M. tibialis anterior. The most common cause is an overload on the muscle that cannot function optimally due to an abnormal foot position. When a foot sinks in too much, the distance from the points of attachment increases, there is a greater tension on the muscle and it means that this muscle has to travel a longer distance while walking. If you then strain the muscle for a long time by, for example, a walk / sport, pain complaints arise.

Podiatric treatment
At PodoPro, an extensive investigation will first look at the cause. When the foot does not function properly, there is usually a reason for this. For example, an ankle sprain in the past (recent or longer) can cause the foot to tilt inward forcibly. In many cases, this can be remedied by means of manual therapy. In addition, a podiatric sole can be made to rest the tendon and restore foot function. The podiatrist will look at your shoes and if necessary give advice on the correct properties of the shoe and it is possible that a bow advice will be given.

In case of acute and severe pain, the podiatrist can also choose to tape your foot as long as your soles are not ready yet.
